Abstract

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is characterized by a persistent fear of social situations, often leading to significant distress and avoidance behaviors. While the mental and emotional toll of social anxiety is well-documented, its impact on career development, particularly in young adults, remains an under-explored area in Pakistan. This study aims to examine how social anxiety affects career development in young adults aged 18-30, focusing on academic performance, professional aspirations, and workplace interactions. Using both qualitative interviews and quantitative surveys, the research finds that individuals with high levels of social anxiety tend to struggle with career-related decisions, interpersonal communication, and networking opportunities, which significantly hinder their professional growth. Moreover, the study explores the social stigma surrounding mental health issues in Pakistan and the barriers to seeking treatment. The paper concludes with recommendations for improving career development interventions for individuals suffering from social anxiety.
